Our Virginia Outdoors Coalition

In the spring of 2021, a coalition of organizations including land trusts, trails advocates, Virginia Indian Tribes and urban conservation groups formed to advocate for dedicated funding for natural resources in Virginia. Under the umbrella “Our Virginia Outdoors,” the coalition is focused on promoting a proposed package of programs that need increased and new funding.

In March 2022, members of the conservation and outdoor recreation community met in Richmond to begin a more formal discussion to chart a path forward for this funding source. The meeting day began with introductions followed by an overview of the history and present-day situation regarding establishing a consistent funding source. There was discussion about what makes this coalition different from other coalitions: this coalition is focused on dedicated funding, land-based projects and work, and building broader coalition/public support.

Maribel Castañeda was brought on in March 2023 to lead the coalition as Coordinator for Our Virginia Outdoors. She has helped coordinate and advance the group’s mission to promote Virginia’s outdoors for all. The coalition pursues this mission by establishing outdoor recreation as essential, advancing dedicated funding for natural resources, shaping policy solutions, and building a diverse and strong coalition.

Maribel Castañeda, Our Virginia Outdoors Coordinator

Maribel Castañeda serves as the Coordinator for Our Virginia Outdoors. She is the point person for the coalition overseeing initiatives and outreach to coalition members, and facilitating on-going communication between all members.

Maribel is a passionate public administrator with over a decade of experience in local and state government working in areas such as education, community development, board organization, and constituent engagement. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a B.A. in International Affairs from James Madison University.

Maribel is an avid runner who has run a marathon and enjoys hiking and camping. She currently serves as a volunteer member of the Sports Backers Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Council to inspire active living in the Richmond region and is a member of the Board of Associates for Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
